hiya,

The web compat team would like to make tshirts and stickers to distribute to community members and others who are helping us with our efforts for Firefox OS and Firefox for Android compatibility.

We don't have any specific designs in mind, but something that highlights the open web as being cross product/platform/browser would be idea. Karl Dubost suggested "Having the mention of Mozilla in small (The sleeve, a corner of the design, etc.)" [1]

Hi all. Looking at my team's current project list, my realistic answer here is that it's going to be hard for this to bubble up to the top of our priorities any time soon. Would instead recommend that we look to pull in some community design support here...this seems like the perfect set of projects to do that.

Sorry about the lack of update. We have a community member working on it and have actively been going back and forth on some concepts out of the bug. Will post as soon as we have something ready for group review - shouldn't be too much longer.

Intentional or not, it's got kind of a can opener gear[1] feel to it (which I dig). :)

Here is the logo with one variation and another idea for a shirt. Color could also be added to this. Possibly suited to the persons favorite color or just a color for guys and and one for girls....
I think I like the 3rd shirt design the best, but maybe with the size of the circles (the dots on the interior of the gear) on the 2nd design? And we probably want "webcompat.com" on the sleeve or bottom of the shirt (or something like that).

If this was a sticker, I wonder where we could stick webcompat.com so it could still be printed as a circular sticker? Maybe if we solved that, we could use the same logo/design for a sticker and a shirt.
When I first looked at the t-shirt mocks I thought that "<compat/>" would be on the back of the shirt. Is that the intention?

@ Mike I will create one with the circle change. Also for the stickers we could just get a die-cut sticker. That way it will be printed on a circle but peels off as the "gear" shape. 
I was also thinking maybe the words could go around inside of the circle in the place of one of the lines or the dots. 


@Lawrence It could be the back or front of the shirt. What ever we decided to go with.

For the sticker, have you tested the design printed on something which is 2 cm diameter or 2cmx2cm. I like the idea that stickers can be small and more usable in that way in more circumstances. be laptop cover, notebook, etc.

I wonder also if it could become a "physical badge" to stick on a notebook. Let's say we have a scorecard with bug numbers and we put stickers in boxes each time we got a fix. Sense of visible progress.
@Karl not yet. I will try this weekend. That would be a great idea, possibly create bar codes or QR codes for the "bug numbers" for each specific project that the person helped out with or completed. On the website we can showcase the badges that people collect, kind of like achievement badges. We can have physical badges to have something tangible and for them to show off their expertise.

Hi all. Let's try to give Steven some summed-up direction so he can finish this up. Here's my take...feel free to amend or edit:

- option 3, but with smaller circles
- would recommend putting </compat> on the back...I like that. Also would recommend against putting the URL on the shirt...simpler is usually better, and I'm assuming you're not counting on this shirt to be a primary vehicle for driving people to your site.
- need to figure out URL placement for sticker...some good ideas in the exchange above.
- I do think this would work as a badge (perhaps the </compat> for simplicity?) but let's figure out the shirt and sticker first

Steven, can you take a final pass at the shirt & sticker based on the above? Feels like we're really close.

Here is the update. Instead of putting the website on the front of the shirt I was thinking we can use it in the collar. So have: compat.com , size of shirt, 100% cotton.

Our team had a meeting to discuss your design ideas (during our work week). We feel like the design is really close--it's looking good. 

One thing we're trying to emphasize is a non-English-centric approach to web compatibility so we probably don't want to include the "</COMPAT>" part, on the back or anywhere else.

Another idea we'd like to explore is using the word "open" in various languages/scripts around the globe (where the dots are currently). Here's a list of languages that we're currently focused on:

* Spanish
* Polish
* Portugese 
* Hungarian
* Serbian
* Czech
* Italian
* Montenegrin
* Hindi
  - other Indian languages?
* Swedish
* Greek
* Japanese
* Chinese

Love the thoughts, thanks. My guess is that adding the languages will make a design that's already fairly busy into one that's *really* busy. Would recommend refining what Steven posted in comment #23.
To expand on Mike's comment, the logo in comment #23 includes the world, which is a common representation of the Web, and a gear like shape on the outside, which can represent fixing. We were trying to come up with some part to represent open as in "the open Web" or "opening up the mobile Web". Mike's comment about languages was to use some of the languages represented in his list to replace the dots in the middle circle with characters that spell 'open' in a few languages. This is just one idea.

To be clear, during our discussion the team agreed that the design looks good and that we're pretty close to a nice logo for our t-shirt or sticker. We definitely do not want to over rotate - no going back to the drawing board or anything like that. Just an honest question about whether we can include some representation of open with a small tweak.
Hi Steven. I had a chat with the web compat team after the earlier bugzilla exchange and the in-person discussion helped us resolve some things that may not have fully come through in the earlier discussion. So, I have a few recommended changes:

- they are very into the idea of stressing the 'open' concept, as discussed above.
- idea: let's keep the globe as the centerpiece, but eliminate the seal and other elements around it. Instead, let's have various translations of the word open going in a circle around the globe. (the compat team will post the translations here)
- related, I do think we should be using the color version of the glob here, so please show that in the next round of mockups. Also, if you could recommend a shirt color (or color options) for it to sit on that would be great.

To be super clear, I like the other style shown in the earlier mockups and think we can make good use of it for stickers, the badge, the website, etc. But for the shirt this feels a little cleaner and, having talked to the team, a little closer to what they have in mind.

My personal preference is for the top two logos here, where the circle of "open" doesn't have a background.

A couple of thoughts:
* can we bump the font size to close the gap at the top of the circle?
* It might look cleaner if there wasn't as much space between the globe and the words (maybe make the glove bigger)

I don't think we need to use all of the languages that Brad listed. You can select the subset of that group that best works in your design, which I think is looking really good.

I don't mind the space. Kind of makes the 'open' ring look like a rink around the planet.

I like it alot. I think replacing commas with bars is a nice improvement (though you didn't replace them between the asian characters, is that intentional?)

Not yet. So far the proposed design is monochrome.
Choice of colors depend also if it's a question of two tones tee, or if the logo is colored at the center. It changes the colors choices. The two colors (background with logo another color) helps to have more variety. I could give set of color combination I like, but not sure that would help in any way.

About the current design. 
I haven't understood why the bars in between in the words are two bars with 6 dots.


Finally: Men/Women size. Putting it as a reminder. It's about the shape of tee-shirt.

Also when the design is finalized maybe we should put the origin files used available with an open license so people can customize it and print it locally if they want.
As for color of the shirt--I'm partial to something dark, like a dark blue or gray. Open text could be white and the globe white or something more eye catching. It would be nice to see a few options.

Would it be possible to upload source assets (eps, psd, svg?) to this bug so I could manually tweak colors myself and get a sense of what might work?
I'm happy to let you guys make the colour decision.

Source assets will be useful as we discussed using this logo for open badges as well.
